posted on 07.02.11 [Review] Verbs for iPhone

In the battle for the perfect IM client, Verbs for iPhone appears in the scene to stay. This app allows you to connect to GoogleTalk, AIM or MobileMe. Also, you can send photos to your contacts via a CloudApp or Doplr.

With a simple and intuitive design, Verbs become a handy alternative to the large list of Instant Messaging Apps that we can found on the App Store.

But, what makes this app so interesting?

First of all: it’s speed. You open the app and BAM! In a couple of seconds you’re online. Even if you’re on 3G or in an slow connection like EDGE. A simple and beautiful design makes super easy to use it. You can add, delete or favorite contacts right from the app. Also, you can view conversations like tabs in Safari.

But (yes, there’s a “but”), there are a couple of things that can make this app perfect.

First of all, and I think the guys at #include tech already knows, is that Verbs only allows local notifications. What does it means? It means that you will be online in your IM service for 10 minutes. After this short period of time, you will go offline.

Also, it only supports a short list of IM services (GoogleTalk, AIM and MobileMe). I’m not a fan of the MSN, but some people does it, and it’s a shame to use an excellent app like this that doesn’t support a more extensive list of IM services (like MSN, Skype, Facebook, etcetera).

What I like Speed, intuitive design, simple. I’m pretty impressed, excellent work with that guys. You have a 10 in UI Design. The code is pretty clean too; since the first time I started using Verbs, it never had a single crash.

What I don’t like Again, the lack of push notifications and a more extensive options of IM services. Another thing that I don’t like is that sometimes, when someone talks to you, a local notification appears, displays the message and two options: “Ignore” and “Accept”; and touching the first option deletes the message you’ve just received. If you are a little bit distracted, you will ignore it and lose it forever.

What I should add The way the conversations displays like Safari tabs looks great, but I’ve notice that when I’m chatting with someone, and other contact talks to me, I can’t go to that conversation in a quickly way, maybe adding a “swipe to switch conversation” would be great.

Who I recommend this app • UI Lovers: I’m the type of iPhone user that loves a well designed app. If you are like me, hell yeah: this app is for you. • Those who owns an iPhone 2G: Again, Verbs is amazing on EDGE too, and some apps like BeejiveIM requires a huge bandwidth to connect.

Verbs for iPhone is $2.99 on the App Store.
